Five Films I Watched in July

Hello everybody!

Today, I’m going to be talking about all the films I watched in July (other thana couple of favouritesI rewatch often and have talked about previously!). These posts are usually only every two months, but I ended up watching loads of films in July and knew I probably would last month too, and decided to split them up. Onto the post!

Mamma Mia– seeing lots of promo for the sequel made me want to see this again, particularly as I’ve not watched it for ages. It’s about Sophie, and takes place in the days leading up to her wedding, which she has invited the three men who could all possibly be her was just as good as I remembered, with a brilliant cast and daft humour, and I do love a bit of ABBA. I think my top 3 songs of the film would be Does Your Mother Know? (Been top of my list since the first time I saw it- I love how sassy it is) Thank You For the Music and Lay All Your Love on Me. The relationship between Donna and Sophie is so wonderful!

Sunshine on Leith– after writing my post for the Theatrical blog tour, I wanted to watch my favourite musical soon after. It’s about Davy and Ally, who have just served in the army in Afghanistan, as they return to Edinburgh and their family and romantic relationships develop and become quite chaotic. I think this is a really decent film version, despite some poor casting decisions (Jane Horrocks and her atrocious Scottish accent particularly irks me, given she murders Sunshine on Leith. I adore that song, and find it quite painful to watch her sing it 😂). The rest of the cast, however, are brilliant, and George Mackay, Freya Mavor and Antonia Thomas particularly stand out. My love for their performances means it’s no surprise my favourite 4 songs (I love the music of the Proclaimers so much choosing 3 is too hard) are Over and Done With, Then I Met You, Letter from America and I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles). It may be cheesy, but I love the finale with 500 Miles a huge amount!

Incredibles 2- I like the first Incredibles film, but I enjoyed this far more! It picks up quite soon after the first film, and sees the Incredibles being given an opportunity to make superheroes legal again, with Elastagirl being the initial focus of the campaign, meaning she is away from home and Mr Incredible is in charge of looking after the children. This leads to lots of amusing scenes and Edna Mode (the supersuit designer) is as delightful as ever, so I wish we’d seen more of her! Another thing I liked was the use of music to build tension in the action sequences!

The Lion King– I buddy watched this with Louise, and we had the best time. This film is basically perfect; there are some heart-wrenching scenes and funny moments that balance each other perfectly, we love the characters (despite our opposing opinions on Pumbaa, who Lou likes and I do not, and it’s more of a love to hate situation with Scar, of course) and the soundtrack is absolutely phenomenal. If you’ve not heard of the Lion King (in which case I presume you’ve been living under a rock), it’s about a kingdom of animals and Simba’s fight to return it to its former glory when his father dies and it is destroyed at the hands of Scar, his uncle.

Mamma Mia 2: Here We Go Again– despite my trip to the cinema itself being a bit of a disaster thanks to an ill timed powercut, I had a lot of fun watching this. It’s a split timeline; with one following Sophie as she renovates the villa into a hotel in memory of her mum and the other showing us Donna in the past during the period in which she meets Sophie’s three possible fathers. I enjoyed the events of both, and thought the new cast captured the characters the original cast created perfectly, particularly Lily James as young Donna, . The originals all continue to excel too. My top 3 of the soundtrack (which I must admit I loved a lot less of than the first film) are Mamma Mia, Why Did it Have to Be Me? and The Name of the Game.
