Hello everybody!
Today, I’m going to be sharing my thoughts on all of the songs from Panic! at the Disco’s latest album Pray for the Wicked, because as you might know if you read this post, they’ve become one of my absolute (I’m talking top 3 here) favourite artists since I started listening to them a couple of months ago. Onto the post!
(F*ck A) Silver Lining– this took a while to grow on me, but I really like it now. It’s ridiculously catchy, really well written with some interesting references when you look closer at them (as well as a fun shout out to Béyonce in the bridge!) and I love the opening (particularly the instruments)
Say Amen (Saturday Night)- I think this was the perfect choice for lead single. I love the lyrics and the melody, it shows off pretty much all of Brendan’s range (especially in live recordings when he often does deeper for the bridge, which I LOVE given how much of a sucker I am for a deep voice and a killer bridge) and it has elements of their earlier music while also retaining the more theatrical, pop sound of this album.
Hey Look Ma, I Made It– this is so infectiously fun. From the puppet music video to the upbeat tempo to how much fun everyone on the stage seems to be having on the stage when it’s performed live, this song just makes me happy.
High Hopes- this only very narrowly wasn’t in my top 3 of the album, and I love it. I adore it’s message that you should dream big and aim high, I love the cheerful brass instrumentals throughout it, and above all, I think it’s catchy and brilliant.
Roaring 20s– this is about Brendon’s experiences of being on Broadway, and it’s one of my very favourites on the album. I love the 20s vibe of the instruments and melody, the writing is phenomenal (I say this about almost every song, because I think the lyrics of them all are brilliant, but I think Roaring 20s is the crème de la crème! I’m a particular fan of the bridge, which shall come as no shock at all, but the verses are amazing too) and I’m beyond obsessed with the slow chorus that comes after the bridge.
Dancing’s Not a Crime– like with Hey Look Ma, I Made It, my favourite thing about this is very simply how much fun it is- I really like how happy they are, . I also love the writing of this generally, though the bridge is especially brilliant and I have a soft spot for the chorus because it reminds me quite a bit of I Don’t Feel Like Dancing by the Scissor Sisters, which me given the almost completely opposite meanings…
One of the Drunks– this covers similar themes to Don’t Threaten me With a Good Time (aka my absolute favourite Panic! song of all time), so it’s pretty fitting that this is one of my favourites on this album too. I think the lyrics are really clever, I absolutely adore the pre-chorus and there’s just something about it that makes me really love it that I can’t quite put my finger on.
The Overpass- this has such a theatrical feel to it for me, particularly due to the sound effects at the very start, and it’s so much fun. This has one of my favourite bridges of the album, which automatically makes me like a song to be honest, it’s super catchy and I think the chorus is brilliant!
King of the Clouds- for a song that was concieved of when Brendon was high, it’s really good. It shows off Brendon’s higher range really well and I’m a big fan of the pre-chorus and bridge, though I don’t love the melody of the verses that much.
Old Fashioned– I have to admit I don’t really like this song much. While I’m a big fan of the brass instrumentals at the beginning and Brendon’s voice is as great as ever, I find the verses quite repetitive and I just don’t really enjoy listening to it.
Dying in LA– this is a piano ballad, and it’s incredibly melancholic in tone. Similarly to how I feel about One of the Drunks and Don’t Threaten Me with a Good Time, this feels like a darker version of LA Devotee (which I also love), and I think it’s a stunning end to the album. I didn’t expect anything this stripped back and simple from Panic , but it’s a beautiful, poignant song that shows off some elements of Brendon’s voice I haven’t heard in many of their songs before.

I remember listening to their first album all the time during my punky days, it was always played at the rock clubs. To be honest I haven’t listened to anything of theirs since but I’ve played Pray For The Wicked the other week and there are a few tracks I love already like Say Amen and Dancings Not A Crime. Need to get listening to them again, they have some great tunes! Thanks for sharing Amy, great post! ❤ xx
