The Mid Year Book Freakout Tag 2019

Hello everybody! Today, it’s time for the Mid Year Freakout Tag, which I’ve done every year since I started blogging and always really enjoy. Onto the post!

1. Best book I’ve read so far in 2019

I have read so many amazing books this year, but I think I, Cosmo takes the crown as my absolute favourite. Some others I really love that I’ve not mentioned later on include Jemima Small Versus the Universe, Swimming Against the Storm, the Star Spun Web, Wildspark, When We Were Warriors, Paper Avalanche, Anna at War, No Ballet Shoes in Syria, Against All Gods and Mo, Lottie and the Junkers.

2. My favourite sequel of the first half of the year

I think this has to be the Curses! It was sensational. And A Girl Called Shameless is brilliant too, and Spies in St Petersburg, and Song of Sorrow.

3. A new release I haven’t read yet but I’m really excited about

The Paper and Hearts Society by Lucy Powrie stands out most.

4. Most anticipated release for the second half of 2019

Top Marks for Murder and the Somerset Tsuanami for sure. And yes that’s two and I’m cheating, but they’re both from my absolute fave authors so I’m cheating.

5. Biggest disappointment

Two Can Keep a Secret. I loved One of Us is Lying; I definitely did not love this second novel from the same author, as you may know if you read the recent post where I termed it a ‘metaphorical snoozefest’.

6. Biggest surprise

The Middler. I almost never like dystopian but I thoroughly enjoyed this one; it had just the right balance of having hope and being sinister,

7. Favourite new-to-me or debut author

I’ve read too many incredible debuts to pick just one, so some I’ve loved are A Pocketful of Stars, Willow Moss and the Lost Day, the Last Spell Breather and the Garden of Lost Secrets. A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder is an amazing YA one. As for new to me, I really enjoyed my 1st experience of Amber Lee Dodd this year and look forward to reading her debut.

8. Favourite fictional crush

I think this has to be Carson from A Girl Called Shameless. What a darling!

9. New favourite character

Cosmo from I, Cosmo! No question.

10. A book that made me cry

I’ve mentioned I, Cosmo loads already but I wept from start to finish with that and it’s definitely the one that made me cry the most so I’m picking it again. Most recently I cried at Begone the Raggedy Witches because Crow’s story broke my heart.

11. A book that made me happy

I, Cosmo again but also going to mention We Won an Island because it’s just absolute sunshine in book form and it cheered me up on the way to hospital when I read it.

12. Favourite book to movie/TV show of the year so far

I think the only adaptation I’ve watched is the Miseducation of Cameron Post, so I guess it’s that by default? I really liked It, and I much preferred it to the book.

13. Favourite post I’ve written this year

This is really hard for a bookish post! It’s technically a few posts, but I’ve been loving doing the books that remind me of songs ones. So far, I’ve done ones themed around Taylor Swift, Panic! At the Disco and George Ezra. Music wise it’s definitely my Ten Tonnes post because it was SO easy to write and I love that album.

14. Most beautiful book I’ve acquired in the first half of 2019

Easily the proof copy of Aisha Bushby’s incredible debut a Pocketful of Stars. It’s a stunning book inside and out.

15. The books I have to read before the end of 2019

How long have you got? There’s hundreds I’d like to get to!

What would your answers to some of these questions be? Do you have any thoughts on the books I’ve mentioned? I’d love to hear in the comments!

  1. Two Can Keep A Secret was a disappointment to me too – I literally ended up guessing what was going to happen within the first 40 pages but I’m hoping for her next book; One of Us Is Next. And Holly definitely gets the spot of new favourite debut author! I can’t wait for AGGGTOM’s sequel!
