The Mid Year Book Freak Out Tag 2021

Hello everybody! Today, it’s time for my annual set of answers to the Mid Year Book Freak out Tag which is always so fun to do. Onto the post!

BEST BOOK YOU’VE READ SO FAR IN 2021

This is WAY too hard. I can maybe do a top 3: The Skylarks’ War, Daisy Jones and the Six and Show Us Who You Are. But I’ve read so many I’ve absolutely loved.

BEST SEQUEL YOU’VE READ SO FAR IN 2021

Crater Lake: Evolution was SUCH a perfect sequel. Like, I think I might love it even more than book one.

NEW RELEASE YOU HAVEN’T READ YET BUT WANT TO

The first thing that popped into my head was the Road Trip. I really like Beth O’ Leary’s writing but things just keep getting in the way of me reading her new release.

MOST ANTICIPATED RELEASE FOR THE SECOND HALF OF THE YEAR

There are quite a few, but I think my top 3 are The Week at World’s End, Once Upon a Crime and the Drowned Ones (I’ve been waiting on that last one for two whole years).

BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT

It’s not my least favourite book of the year by any means, but I think maybe the House at the Edge of Magic. While I liked it, it was so different to what I expected and I loved the concept so I just wanted more from it.

BIGGEST SURPRISE

I think I’m going to say This Can Never Not be Real. It was pretty different to what I thought it would be like, and I loved it so, so much.

FAVORITE NEW AUTHOR (DEBUT OR NEW TO YOU)

Nicola Skinner! She’s absolutely incredible and I’m obsessed with her books. And my favourite debut is Amari and the Night Brothers without a shadow of a doubt!

NEWEST FICTIONAL CRUSH

Honestly, there’s not many major ones so far this year. Like I can appreciate them as love interests, but no one I myself would go for. Except maybe for Elliot in the Yearbook.

NEWEST FAVOURITE CHARACTER

Jessie from Hexed is a huge standout character of this year for me! I loved her so much.

A BOOK THAT MADE YOU CRY

I’ve already talked about the Skylarks’ War, which made me openly weep in front of a bunch of people fixing my roof, but next to that Pretending made me cry the most.

A BOOK THAT MADE YOU HAPPY

I can’t pick between Me, My Dad and the End of the Rainbow and the Super Miraculous Journey of Freddie Yates, because both are just absolutely joyous.

THE MOST BEAUTIFUL YOU’VE BOUGHT (OR RECEIVED) THIS YEAR

Hands down my proof of Rainbow Grey. The sprayed edges are just STUNNING.

WHAT BOOKS DO YOU NEED TO READ BY THE END OF THE YEAR

So many!! I’ve made it a goal to read a LOT more this year instead of wasting time on stuff that makes me miserable when I could have my nose in a book, so I’m pretty confident I’ll hit my Goodreads goal of 250, and my reach goal is 300 so we’ll see how it goes I guess. If I started listing all the books I’m excited for I’d honestly be here all night typing them out.

Thank you so much for reading! What are your thoughts on the books I’ve mentioned in my answers? Which books would you have chosen for each prompt? I’d love to hear in the comments!
