Q & A: Festive Facts and Other Fun Stuff!

Hello everybody, and welcome to day 10 of blogmas! Today, I’m going to be answering some questions people sent me on social media, a lot of which turned out to be festive, so I really hope you enjoy reading my answers. I always worry I’m too boring for this kind of post but I really like doing them! Onto the post!

If you were ever featured on a true crime documentary, what crime would you have committed?

I loved ths question and I knew the answer STRAIGHT AWAY. I will have finally snapped and started attacking people who make cheeky comments about my walking stick. Last week, I went out shopping at the weekend. In that one, very short trip, I was pushed out of the way by two people and openly laughed at and mocked by another. Apparently it’s very funny that I walked slower than them…

What first inspired/led you to start your book blog?

I have basically always wanted to have a blog. Originally my dream was to have a Sims blog in the vein of Sullivan Sims, because I was obsessed with it and the humour and the characters. But then I stopped playing Sims so often, and started reading blogs like YA Yeah Yeah, and thought “hmmm, I wish I could do that”. So I longed to do it, and then I was on study leave from school and I just thought :”why not?”. I set up a Twitter that afternoon, a WordPress account the following day, and posted my first post on June 1st. And here I am 4 and a half years later!

If you could meet any author, who would you meet?

Oh my god, there are so many I would absolutely love to meet. I don’t actually know if I can pick just one… Although I think Emma Carroll and Robin Stevens are about top of my list, they’ve done events close to me before and I’ve never been able to make it. And also Elle McNicoll, who has visited my local bookstore SO MANY TIMES and every single one, I’ve missed her.

Have you always been a fan of reading?

I have! I think I got my first library card when I was 3, and some of the only things I remember from early childhood are about me loving books and going to bookshops .

What’s your favourite genre of children’s book?

My very, very favourite is mystery, but fantasy is a close second. And I also love contemporary. Picking one is so hard πŸ˜‚ What was the first book that you really, REALLY connected with as a child? My first one would have been the Pony Club Secrets series by Stacy Gregg, which I got into when I was about 6, but some other really formative ones for me before I hit my teens were Karen McCombie’s Ally’s World series, Cathy Hopkins’ and Cathy Cassidy’s books, Helen Moss’ Adventure Island and Lauren St John’s Laura Marlin books. And I think I read the first Murder Most Unladylike when I was 12, so I guess it would count too?

What character from a book has really, REALLY resonated with you?

I think my absolute most relatable character ever is Peyton from Sara Barnard’s Destination Anywhere. I loved her so much and I think we have a lot in common/could commiserate over many horror stories we have from school.

What are the ingredients in a book that draw you in most?

If I see the following in a blurb, I’m almost guaranteed to pick up the book: animals (especially magical or talking ones!), cool magic, some kind of mystery or adventure, boarding schools, found family vibes and 1920s settings. There are loads more but these are some of my main ones!

Which book do you wish you could rewrite the ending to and what would the new ending be?

Literally any book that has an ending where the disabled person is magically cured in the end. Especially if it’s because they fall in love. The new ending would be that the love interest loves them WITH their disability, and doesn’t infantalise them or treat them weirdly, and just loves them and cares for them and isn’t awful. Red in Get a Life, Chloe Brown is the gold standard in this, btw.

What’s your favourite Christmas film?

I have a top 3, because in case you’ve not noticed I am awful at making decisions. Last Christmas, Olaf’s Frozen Adventure and Miracle on 34th Street (the remake version, because I love Mara Wilson!)

Which fictional character would you choose to cook you Christmas dinner and which other fictional characters would you invite to share it with you?

Okay, so we don’t really do a big, traditional Christmas dinner. Only my dad and my dogs like Turkey, so they eat that, and I don’t like Turkey and my mum is a pescatarian so we usually have something different. Often macaroni cheese. And if you pay close attention to my reviews you may guess where I’m going with this… the macaroni descriptions in The Faraway Truth made me UNBELIEVABLY HUNGRY. so I’d have Zoe and her dad cook it.

They’d be very welcome to join in with eating it too, but some other characters I’d love to host are Ade from Boy in the Tower, maybe Emmie Blue and Elliott because they’re just lovely and also Cora and Adrien from Show Us Who You Are because I want to give them a massive hug. If I listed everyone I’d want to invite I’d never stop so I cut myself off at 5 πŸ˜‚

What’s your favourite Christmas song?

My all time fave is Carol of the Bells, which is a kind of creepy Christmas carol and I just love it a lot. And I’m also a big fan of Michael BublΓ©’s Christmas album, as you’ll probably have guessed if you watch my Instagram stories, and obviously my faves Vistas and George Ezra both have Christmas songs now so I listen to those on repeat!! What was the first Christmas book that you remember?

Was it Father Christmas by Raymond Briggs or Spot’s Christmas or what?

Okay, so I couldn’t remember this and had to ask my parents, and other than the Night Before Christmas one they couldn’t think of anything Christmassy. But apparently my wintry fave was the Gruffalo’s Child. I really love the animation of that that’s usually on at Christmas too!

I know that, like me, you love animals – which fictional pet would you most like to join you on a Christmas Day walk (with or without their owners!) and where would that perfect walk take you?

I loved this question so much!! I would love to meet basically every fictional animal ever, because they are usually my favourites in a book. But my all time favourite is Cosmo, from I, Cosmo by Carlie Sorosiak. We would go on a slow, gentle beach walk because he’s a little older, and I am obviously not very speedy, and it would be bliss. And he’s a golden retriever which is very on brand for me!

What’s on your Christmas playlist?

It’s not very long because I’m hideously fussy with Christmas songs πŸ˜‚. Here is a screenshot!!

Whamaggedon or revel in every hearing?

I LOVE Last Christmas!! And it’s in my fave Christmas film which I try and watch as many times as possible during December so it’s kind of inevitable I’ll hear it πŸ˜‚. But my fave George Michael song is the one that plays over the credits of Last Christmas, I think it’s called This Is How We Want You to Get High πŸ™‚

What Christmas song is stalking you this year? Ooooh I love this, and there is ALWAYS one. I’m not very fond of Let it Snow and I’ve heard it a bit much for my liking already!!

Sprout or not to sprout?

Definitely no to sprouts!!

There’s one special book all tied up with a bow peeping out of your Christmas stocking… what do you hope it is?

Oooh this is such a brilliant question. I’m going to go for the Alex T Smith edition of The One Hundred and One Dalmatians because I probably shouldn’t buy it for myself given I already have a copy of the book in a different edition, but I really love the cover and the interior illustrations I’ve seen. I’d also love a new edition of my other favourite classic Charlottes

Thank you all so much for reading!! What would your answers to some of these be? I’d love to hear in the comments!
