The Gifts I’d Give My Favourite Characters by Jodie Garnish

Hello everybody! Today, I’m delighted to be sharing a post from 2022 debut Jodie Garnish, who’s written about the gifts she’d give her favourite characters from other people’s books. She wrote an aptly named book called the Spectaculars, which I highly recommend for all fans of funny, fabulous middle grade fantasy. Onto the post!

What I would give my favourite book characters for Christmas

Samwise Gamgee, from The Lord of the Rings: What else? PO-TA-TOES. He can boil ‘em, mash ‘em and stick ‘em in a stew to his heart’s content, while I dance around with ribbons in my hair. NB: This gift is contingent on an affirmative answer to the marriage proposal I’ll be presenting him with first.

Howl from Howl’s Moving Castle: An all-expenses paid trip to Sephora. This man LIVES to be beautiful, and Sephora would be his paradise on Earth.

Ebeneezer Scrooge, from A Christmas Carol: Now, this is a tricky one. What do you give a man who’s been haunted by four spirits in one night, faced all his previous traumas and had his entire worldview overturned? Answer: A DRINK. There’s a bottle of Irish Whiskey with this man’s name on it, and I will be more than happy to provide it. Ideally, he’d bring along my second favourite character from A Christmas Carol, Kermit the frog.

Mercutio, from Romeo & Juliet: Two tickets to Las Vegas. We’d go, we’d have the time of our lives, no one would need to duel anyone to the death. 10/10, ideal scenario.

Celie, from The Colour Purple: A hug and a bouquet of fresh flowers every single day for the rest of her life, because this woman has EARNED IT.

Miss Honey, from Matilda: The original cottagecore icon. I’d buy her a whole heap of baking goodies, a subscription to Gardeners World, and that strawberry dress that everyone was talking about at one point.

Jo and Amy March, from Little Women: for Jo, a six-figure, multi-book deal complete with a perfect 5* goodreads rating and optioned film rights. Amy: JUSTICE.

The entire cast of Six of Crows: Therapy.

Thank you so much for reading! Which characters would you most like to give gifts to? Have you read Jodie’s brilliant book?? I’d love to chat in the comments!

Speak very soon, Amy xxx
