Christmas Time, Mistletoe and CAKE by Daisy May Johnson

Hello everybody! Today, I’m thrilled to welcome Daisy May Johnson to the blog for a second time, and for you to read her post about the gifts she’d give her characters for Christmas. Onto the post!

Let’s go Christmas shopping for the characters of How To Be Brave and How To Be True!

Hello! My name is Daisy May Johnson and I am the author of How To Be Brave and How To Be True. My books are about three best friends – Calla North, Edie Berger, and Hanna Kowalczyk – who attend a boarding school called the School of the Good Sisters. The school is run by Nuns who teach useful things like helicopter maintenance and how to make poison darts and what time of the day is the best time for cake (this is a trick question, there is no wrong time for cake). How To Be Brave is about Calla, and How To Be True is about Edie, and they both involve adventures and chaotic good deeds and a substantial amount of biscuits and cake. And because it’s Christmas, I think it’s time to buy my characters some Christmas presents. Let’s go Christmas shopping!

Calla and Elizabeth North

Calla’s father died when she was a baby and so she’s spent her entire life with her mum, Elizabeth North. The two of them are absolutely everything to other and Calla would do anything to make sure that her mum’s okay. And sometimes Elizabeth does require a lot of looking after because she knows a lot about ducks and not a lot about Practical Things Like Paying Bills. How To Be Brave focuses on Calla and Elizabeth and a first term at school like no other…

For Calla, this Jammie Dodger necklace would be perfect, these duckling socks that Elizabeth would secretly love but have to point out all the factual inaccuracies and also this Girl Power t-shirt. I’ll throw in Celebrate With Kim-Joy because Calla would love looking through the pictures and picking out things to try and bake for her friends and family.

Elizabeth gets this t-shirt, this Cite Your Sources badge and also this Dr PhD badge. A lot of people have underestimated Elizabeth throughout her life and I think it would be nice for her to remind them all of how amazing she actually is.

Edie Berger

Edie is four foot nothing of revolutionary spirit. She was born to make a difference in the world and she’ll do that with every breath and bone in her body. She’s the friend you want in a crisis because she’ll sort out the crisis with one hand behind her back and her eyes closed and then she’ll bring you Restorative Biscuits when it’s all over. If you want to know more about Edie, she’s the central focus in How To Be True which features family secrets, Parisian adventures, and also a little bit of Klingon thrown in for good measure. Edie gets a Deeds Not Words badge, this personalised notebook to fill with her revolutionary ideas, this print of Paris to remind her of her beloved home town, and a box of Macarons from the Ladurée Macaron Shop (her spiritual home).

Hanna Kowalczyk

Hanna! Hanna! My lovely little book obsessed Hanna! Hanna is the third member of our friendship trio and is possessed of a very quiet and persistent wisdom. She will bring a reading list of books with her to every location and fight for the right to library whenever she can. I love her very much. Hanna would get this gorgeous library cabinet to fully live out her librarian dreams, this Strong Female Character tote bag, this Book Lovers Club pin for her and also this artist’s book all about biscuits (Biscuits and books, the perfect intersection).

Good Sister June

All of my books are narrated by a very special nun and although she’ll never tell you who she is, she really does want you to know that her name is Good Sister June and she adores Victoria Sponge, Firmly Minded And Independent Souls, and Puns (and also buns).

For Good Sister June, I’m buying this post from The Railway Children , these miniature Victoria Sponges which would entertain her very much, this Gingerbread Nun ornament, and also this handmade cupcake stand so that her cakes are Appropriate Displayed.

Thank you so much for reading! Have you read these delightful books? Which of these presents would you most like to recieve? I’d love to chat in the comments!

Speak very soon,

Amy xxx
