Hello everybody! So, I never do that well with TBRs, but I thought I might as well set myself some to work through during the summer, even though I’ll inevitably stray off this list and hopefully read a lot more than just ten books. This is part of Top Ten Tuesday. Onto the list!
Review Copies
The House on Hoarder Hill– I’ve had this for absolutely ages, and it genuinely sounds brilliant so I should definitely have read it by now. It’s about children who go and stay in their grandfather’s creepy house, and them trying to work out why he went missing when they start receiving strange messages. I suspect I might love it…
Fig Swims the World– this sounds SO good- it’s a teen/young YA about a girl who decides she wants to swim across the world in a bid to impress her perfectionist mother. The fact that it’s being compared to Geek Girl is the main thing that makes me feel very bad for not having read it already!!
Fin and Rye and Fireflies– technically I won this in a giveaway but it’s a proof so I’d really like to read it before it comes out! It’s about a boy called Fin, who gets outed, which causes major problems with his conservative parents (in that they move him to a new town and threaten him with conversion therapy) as he falls in love with a boy called Rye and they hatch a plan to try and save him from this fate. I’m so looking forward to it!
Umbrella Mouse to the Rescue– the first book in this duology was so lovely, so I’m sure this will be just as good. It’s set towards the end of the second world war and focuses on a mouse called Pip, who loses her parents in a bombing and joins the animal resistance group Noah’s Ark, who carry out vital work for the war effort at the feet of human soldiers and spies. I think this one sees her trying to get to the umbrella museum in Italy, where she still has some family members.
The Key to Finding Jack– Ewa Jozefkowicz wrote Girl 38, which was one of my favourite books last year, so this was on my TBR by default before I even heard the brilliant premise- it’s about a girl whose brother goes missing while he’s on his gap year, and the mysterious key she finds in his room with the initials SF on it afterwards, and her quest to find out what it is.
Some Upcoming Releases (there are SO many I’m looking forward to but these are some very exciting ones!)
You Should See Me in a Crown– just about everyone is raving about this right now, and it sounds AMAZING so I’m not surprised! I chose this as my prize for winning #QueerQuiz the other night, which is apt given that it’s a female/female romance, which sees the main character Liz trying to become prom queen in a bid to win a scholarship, even though she REALLY doesn’t want to do the competition.
The Unadoptables– this is another debut I’m really excited for in 2020, and I feel like I’ve been waiting on it forever since it got postponed from the the original May 14th release date. It sounds like one of those future classic kind of middle grades- it’s about five children who were all left at an orphanage in very unusual ways, and what happens when a mysterious stranger tries to separate them years later.
Death Set Sail– this is my most anticipated release of the entire year, and if I possibly can I’ll be reading it the minute I get hold of it in August! It’s the finale to my beloved Murder Most Unladylike series, and I’m already a wreck at the thought of saying goodbye to the Detective Society.
Backlist
Front Desk– I’ve owned this for ages, I’ve wanted to read it since Robin Stevens included it in one to her (fabulous) recommendations videos! It’s about a girl called Mia, who lives in a motel, and whose parents hide immigrants. It sounds so good, and the sequel is out soon as well!
The Pearl Thief– so, I have a bit of a funny relationship with Elizabeth Wein- I DNF her most famous book Code Name Verity (it was my birthday, and it’s not the cheeriest in my defense…) but I’ve loved her recent Barrington Stoke novellas Firebird and White Eagles, so I’ve been meaning to give her longer books another try for ages. I know this is the prequel to CNV so I may miss some foreshadowing, but I want to start here because this is a mystery (love a good mystery!) And also Lou loved it.
What books are you planning to read over the summer? Do we have any in common? I’d love to hear in the comments!
Amy x

I definitely agree with you about Death Sets Sail! I have loved this series since reading the first to my daughter as a bedtime story when she was at primary school. She’s just left Year 11 & we are both excited to read this final episode in the series😃

I’ve been reading them since they first came out too- I’m so sad to be saying goodbye to Daisy and Hazel! I really hope you and your daughter enjoy it too 💜

Thank you! I think I’m going to be heartbroken twice, firstly because it’s the final book and secondly because I fear my favourite character is doomed in this one!

Good luck with your TBR 🙂
I struggled with Code Name Verity, but I thought the audiobook was amazing if you can get your hands on it.

Great list!! I recently finished death sets sail – I was kind of bittersweet about finishing this series… but I think it was a very well done ending. I was a bit sceptical at first at how similar it sounded to Agatha Christie’s death on the Nile, but I can safely say it was NOTHING like that haha. Here was my review of it 🙂 : https://hundredsandthousandsofbooks.blog/2020/09/04/the-end-of-an-era-death-sets-sail/
