Top Ten Tuesday: Cover Redesigns I Loved/Hated

Hello everybody! Today, I’m taking part in Top Ten Tuesday once again, and this week’s theme is cover designs we loved or hated. I was feeling indecisive (because I am ALWAYS indecisive), so I did a mix of both! Onto the post!

LOVED

Scarlet and Ivy series– the original designs of this series looked so old fashioned, and not in a good way, but the new ones are STUNNING. I really wish they’d had the new covers all along!

Pony Club Secrets– I don’t own the redesigned covers of these, but I REALLY want to. This was one of my favourite series when I was younger, and I thought the original covers suited them really well too, but the new ones are just so beautiful. I’d love to replace my very tatty, read to bits covers with them one day!

Lorali– the original cover of this was super dull, and it was actually the redesign that finally got me to pick it up! The new one is so colourful and pretty. All I remember about the first one is that it was blue.

The Graces– I didn’t hate the old cover for this by any means, but I equally wasn’t that attached to it. The new one is absolutely perfect for the book- it’s elegant and ominious and so striking. I LOVE it, and the cover for the Curses.

Murder Most Unladylike– I’m not sure how well known this is, but the beautiful blue cover of Murder Most Unladylike was NOT the original. It was pink, and much more intricate, and the new one fits the book and the series that followed so much better. I did like the original though, to be fair!

The One Hundred and One Dalmatians– I love the cover of this I own so much, but I’m obsessed with the new(ish) Alex T Smith one. I love his illustrations anyway and I love this book so it was kind of a foregone conclusion, but I REALLY love it. His Cruella is so fantastic especially.

HATED

Northern Lights– sorry, but I can’t stand the most recent UK covers of this trilogy and I’m not even a fan (‘ve read the first and I didn’t really click with it too much). Imagine getting hired to illustrate a series with a brilliant polar bear and not putting them in the cover?! I do not understand at all. Even besides that, they’re so bland and boring, in my opinion.

Cathy Cassidy’ s back catalogue– I’m talking about the redesign before last here where there were people on the covers, because I REALLY hated those. I had such vivid pictures of what all the characters looked like and the models just weren’t those people for ANYONE. I don’t love the new Erin Keen ones, but they’re a hell of a lot better than those redesigns were. I especially hated them since the original covers were so pretty!

Ally’s World– I love both eras of the Spike Gerrell covers for this, but quite frankly any others can get in the bin. Yes, I am protective of my childhood faves, why do you ask? Spike Gerrell captured the characters SO well and just how I see them, and they were perfect for the tone and humour of the books too. The others I’ve seen are just… bland and don’t capture the books even remotely.

Radio Silence– I’m well aware I’m being unfair with this one, because there’s nothing wrong with the new one and I don’t hate it, but I really loved the original cover of this book, and it just isn’t the same. I’m sure I’d still love it and relate hugely if I reread it in that cover (which I do plan to!), but I’ll always miss seeing the original around when people talk about the book.

Which cover redesigns do you love and hate most? Do we share any? I’d love to hear in the comments!

  1. Totally with you on Scarlett and Ivy, I have an original first book and the new last book and they are just worlds apart- the new covers are so much more evocative and intriguing!!

  2. I don’t know if this counts as a re-design, but the covers of the original, hardback Ruby Redfort series by Lauren Child are super stylish and eye-catching whereas all of the paperback covers are disappointing.

Btw, I love your blog. Just discovered it for the first time today. I’m relatively new to blogging, focussing on reviewing MG and early readers suitable for a primary school library

  3. I don’t know a lot of these but I like the Scarlet and Ivy covers. I like Northern Lights, but the covers are just a bit…meh…I agree. And no way that MMU used to be so different, they’re so iconic now!

  4. I love the new ones! And I’m glad it’s not just me with Northern Lights. I’ll try and see if I can find a pic of the old MMU one- it’s a very pretty cover but I’m so glad they went with the one it has now instead!

  5. The new Northern Lights (and the rest of the trilogy) is very much meh, my personal favourites were the 20th anniversary editions and I’m still upset I never got around to buying them
